THE GOODiES >> SkiN CARE FOR US OiLY GiRLS

Growing up, I saw my oily skin as a curse. Plagued by pimples, a shiny forehead and huge pores, I wanted to be the person with the paperbag over my head. According to Wikipedia, oily skin is defined as this:

Oily skin is caused by over-active glands, that produce a substance called sebum, a naturally healthy skin lubricant. When the skin produces excessive sebum, it becomes heavy and thick in texture. Oily skin is typified by shininess, blemishes and pimples. The oily-skin type is not necessarily bad, since such skin is less prone to wrinkling, or other signs of aging, because the oil helps to keep needed moisture locked into the epidermis (outermost layer of skin).

The negative aspect of the oily-skin type is that oily complexions are especially susceptible to clogged pores, blackheads, and buildup of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. Oily skin can be sallow and rough in texture and tends to have large, clearly visible pores everywhere, except around the eyes and neck.

Over the years, I've developed some methods of keeping my oily skin under control. Remember, this is based on my personal experiences, and only your dermatologist can give you the most soundest advice.

01 Before purchasing products, read the labels!
This is very important. Make sure what you're purchasing is specified for oily/combination skin. Products that contain fragrance are a big no-no. Fragrances can be irritating, so be careful. Things that contain soothing ingredients, like aloe or cucumber extracts, are awesome. I recommend the Deep Clean Invigorating line from Neutrogena, or the Pure line from Garnier Skin Naturals.

02 Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate.
This is probably going to be the most important part of your daily routine. Make sure you exfoliate at least once a day. To prevent the exfoliant from damaging your skin, make sure the bottle states that it is safe for daily use. Avoid scrubs with large particles, as these can be damaging.

03 Formulate a skincare routine.
If you don't already have a routine in place, put one together and stick to it. My routine in the morning consists of cleanser, toner, and a light mosturizer with SPF protection. Before bed, my routine consists of my exfoliator, toner, and a night cream. Once a week I use a clay masque, and a pore strip on my nose.

04 Oil-free is your friend.
Make sure all of your products, doesn't matter if it's make up or moisturizer, read "oil-free." The oils in some products can actually cause your glands to become even more active than usual, so try to avoid these at all costs.

05 Clean off your make up thouroughly.
Make up is a big cause of clogged pores, and the blemishes and pimples that result from them. Most excellent make up removers are costly, but it is well worth you investment. Under no circumstances should you fall asleep with your make up on. If you're going to be overnight somewhere that you didn't expect to be, it's worthwile to invest in some face wipes, like these. They remove your make up, and fit in your purse. You have no idea how many pimples and break outs you'll save yourself from.

06 Don't pick!
If you have a pimple, white head or black head that you're dying to pick... don't. You're doing more harm than good. Leave it alone, and let it go away on it's own.
